Educational Initiatives

We are proud of our accomplishments in the past year, and the influence we have had on Hispanic students. We awarded $67,304 to 53 of the best and brightest Hispanic students from the Wichita-metro area. At least half of our scholarship recipients are the first in their family to attend college. The scholarships provided them with opportunities that might otherwise have seemed unobtainable.

We continued with the “Tu Futuro: Through Education and Leadership” workshop with the support of a $5,000 grant from the AT&T Foundation. The workshop provided 140 Hispanic high school juniors from USD 259 with information to help them prepare for college and to hone the skills needed to pursue a post-secondary education.

Since we realize the importance of our students being prepared to make the transition from high school to college, we continued to assist them through the “Making The Most out of College” workshop. It has been noted that a student will complete their college education if they have the needed support system to help them navigate through their college experience. Cox Communications was a generous supporter of this program through a $3,000 grant.

This year we are working to develop the Hispanic Scholars Alumni Network. This will allow us to stay in contact with our scholarship recipients. We are also working in partnership with the Kansas Leadership Center to create a program that will provide leadership and professional development training. Our educational initiatives now run full circle. KHEDF programs provide the resources and support which takes the students from high school to college and into a professional career.
